JUST so everyone knows ive been riding since i was 5. first saddle seat, then western, then dressage, and how hunter jumper adn i want to move on to show jumping. the horse im getting is going to be an eventer but u know a cheap lessen horse. not interestred in showing. im just taking the horse to lessons every week.

Well, you are on the right track if you plan on keeping your horse at this pals place. He apparently knows about horses and how to care for them. So that is covered. He will know about the fencing, and other questions that you may have. A horse will have less health problems if it is out 24/7 such as colic, thrush, weaving, cribbing, respiratory problems etc etc. They get the daily sunshine and exercise they so much need just running around the pasture and grazing. If they are out door horses all year round, no blankets are needed, there is a saving right there. Their coats are shinier, and hooves are in good shape. The do not need a lot for shelter, A crop of trees will do even in the winter time. Fresh water is another must but I am sure that is available in this situation. Perhaps if you are going to be at this pals place where your horse will be you could offer to do some barn jobs or what ever is needed around the place to help pay the pasture board. You do not say what you plan on doing with this horse, but if you are planning on using it for trail riding and not showing, then you can save a bundle on unnecessary shampoos, hoof dressings, and show fees and travelling. etc etc. Just get the bare essentials when you are starting out. You will find out as time goes on what is really important for the horse. During the summer when grass is at a premium, you will not have to spend a lot of money on extra feeds. horses can and do live on hay and or grass with out other feeds, it is a pity that so much money is spent of unneeded feeds and supplements. Of course watch the intake of fresh grass (your pal will know about this) when you first let it out.
